The first step in learning English is to be able to pronounce the English words you see on mobile phones, newspapers, shopping malls and street advertisements. This requires successfully learning the English pronunciation method.

學習英語的第一步，是要在手機、報章、商場和街上廣告所看到的英語單詞，都能拼讀出來，這就要成功學到英語拼音的方法。

 

Therefore, how do we choose between the three English pronunciation “methods”: the International Phonetic Alphabet, “Phonics English Pronunciation”, and “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”?

Fortunately, I have learned the International Phonetic Alphabet, “Phonics English Pronunciation” , “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”. Here I will analyze the differences among the three.

有幸，本人曾經學過英文的國際音標、“Phonics 英語拼音”、「LEEK 英語拼音法」 等，在這本人來分析他們三者不同之處。

 

The International Phonetic Alphabet is basically a method that English teachers need to learn to judge the pronunciation of English words. It is like having a third party draw some symbols to tell you how to actually pronounce the English word. It is not about teaching an English pronunciation method, but the accuracy of the pronunciation is high.

國際音標，基本是英語教師需要學的一個判斷英文生字讀音的正確方法，像由第三者畫一些符號，告訴你那個英文生字實際怎樣去讀，而非教授英語拼音，但讀出來的準確度高。

 

Because it is not a pronunciation method, the International Phonetic Alphabet has already faded away about twenty years ago. Furthermore, natives in the United Kingdom and the United States would never teach children the International Phonetic Alphabet. The main reason is that it is not a pronunciation method for English.

由於它不是一個拼音方法，故此，國際音標早已於約二十年前息微，所以如英美的外國人，總不會教幼兒國際音標，最主要原因是它並非英語拼音方法。

 

Furthermore, if you have to look up every English word you can’t pronounce in a dictionary, it is not only very time-consuming, but also many students who have learned the International Phonetic Alphabet in school may not be able to pronounce the longer words correctly. The accuracy is obviously low.

再者，若每一個不懂的英語生字，都要查字典，不但很費時間，而且有相當曾在學校學過國際音標的學生，看著那些稍長的單詞，很大可能無法正確讀出來，準確度明顯偏低。

 

“Phonics English Pronunciation” is said to be a basic English phonetic learning method for young children developed by an American education scholar. It requires the guidance of excellent tutors who would supplement the students with books, music and games. It can enhance children’s interest and confidence in English.

“Phonics 英語拼音”，據說由一位美國教育學者所研發的一種給幼兒學習的基本英語自 然拼音法，需要憑著有優良導師的前題指導下，讓學生透過書籍、音樂及小遊戲，能提升幼兒對英語的興趣及信心。

 

“Phonics English Pronunciation” can be said to be a very simple English pronunciation method that allows you to learn the basics of English pronunciation. But in fact, “Phonics English Pronunciation” is often criticized for having too many exceptions, and its current reliability is relatively insufficient. Moreover, it does not teach how to separate syllables in detail, and there is not a way to teach how to divide the syllables into high, mid and low pitches. However, “Phonics English Pronunciation” can still allow children to learn some simple English pronunciation methods and instill a certain degree of confidence and help in reading new English words.

“Phonics 英語拼音”可說是一個很簡單的英語拼音方法，能學到英語拼音法的最基本。 但事實上，“Phonics 英語拼音”常被批評例外情況太多，現今可靠性相對不足，而且沒 有詳細教授分音節，更從沒有方法教怎樣分音律等，但“Phonics 英語拼音”仍可令幼兒 生學到部份簡單的英語拼音法，對其讀英文生字仍有一定的信心及幫助。

 

“LEEK English Pronunciation Method” was surprisingly developed by Dr. Kaiman Lee, a foreign professor (Macau resident) who is about 80 years old, after about 30 years of intermittent research and development, and optimization. This is an English pronunciation method published by a Macau educational institution and developed by a Macau person. “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” is indeed the most complete English pronunciation method in the world.

This pronunciation method is unique. Not only can students master the methods and tips of pronouncing English on their own after learning it, but this method also teaches how to separate syllables in detail. It is also the only pronunciation method that teaches the rhythm of syllables, including how to distinguish high, mid and low pitches, plus many clever secrets, such as how to judge which of two high pitches is higher to determine which pronunciation is correct. This pronunciation method has significantly fewer exceptions than Phonics, which has the advantage analogous to mental calculations that are sometimes faster than computer calculations. Therefore, “Study Hard Education Centre” had decided to adopt the “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” as the only English pronunciation method for teaching courses for students and training tutors starting from August 2023.

故此,“學勤教育”由 2023 年 8 月開始，決定唯一採用「LEEK 英語拼音法」作為教學 課程及培訓補習導師的唯一英語拼音方法。

 

Study Hard Education Centre taught the International Phonetic Alphabet from 1992 to 2007, Phonics English Pinyin from 2005 to 2023, and LEEK English Pronunciation Method from 2020.

Chapter 6: How Can I Be Convinced to Learn LEEK – 我怎樣可以被說服要學 LEEK

(A) Why should we seize the time to learn English pronunciation method?

1. Pronunciation is the most necessary foundation for learning any language, especially English. However, in the past years, most schools in Macau have not had a curriculum of teaching English pronunciation (except the International Phonetic Alphabet). Without the confidence of the most basic English pronunciation and reading skills, students will fall behind in conversation, tense, grammar, reading comprehension and writing, etc.

2. Since the liberalization of Macau’s gambling licenses, Macau has gradually developed into an international city and entered the world stage. A: “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” was created by Dr./Prof. Kaiman Lee after more than thirty years of intermittent research and optimization. He analyzed the English words he knew and what he should know, and found out the common points of their sounds, classified them and synthesized them into non-repetitive pronunciation methods. The result became the three parts of this course: The first part is mainly four pages teaching basic pronunciation methods. 1. Vowels, 2. Consonants, 3. Rhythm of Syllables, 4. Five steps of basic pronunciation. The second part is about two special arrangements vowels: 1. “Consonant, vowel, consonant, e”; 2. Double vowels. A: “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” uses the simplest method to teach how to divide syllables: a consonant leading a vowel forms a syllable. This is the only pronunciation method that teaches rhythms of syllables: if there are more than three syllables in a word, the last syllable must be low pitch. The two syllables before the last syllable must be high or mid pitch. All syllables before the last three are mid pitches. The three pitches of “Ah, ah and a” in high, low and mid sounds are definitely required. Other English pronunciation methods do not have this rule. 6: Why can I learn it with only 4 pages of paper? Are there many words that cannot be pronounced using these four pages? If so, what should I do?

A: Students will first learn the basic LEEK pronunciation method, which is summarized in four pages, with examples of single-vowel words. It is the first part of the three-parts course. Special situations that are not covered with this basic part are in the other two parts: The second part is the two special arrangements of vowels: 1. “Consonant, vowel, consonant, e”; 2. Double vowels, The third part is the two special arrangements of consonants: the prefixes and the suffixes of words. The remaining portions of words in the second and third parts must be pronounced using the basic LEEK pronunciation method of the first part.

6: 為何能4版紙就學會? 有否多少字是用這方法不能讀到? 如有應怎做?

A: 學生將先學習基本的LEEK 拼音方法，該方法總結為四頁，加在它們之上是單母音的例子。是課程分為三大部分的第一部分。這基本拼音方法遇不到的特殊情況都離不開在另外兩個部分: 第二部分是兩個母音的特別排列：1.“子音、母音、子音、e”；2. 雙母音, 第三部分是兩個子音的特別排列：字首和字尾。 第二部分和第三部分的單詞都要使用第一部分基本的LEEK 拼音方法來拼出。

7: How can students verify outside of the class whether they have pronounced correctly using the four-page method?

A: Every word with more than one syllable has two pronunciations, but you don’t know which one is correct, or you don’t know if your chosen pronunciation is correct. The LEEK pronunciation method gives you four measurement standards: the easiest, the fastest, the smoothest and the nicest sound. Between the two, the one with the higher score is most likely to be correct. If you still can’t make up your mind, compare the two high-pitched syllables to see which one is higher; the pronunciation of the word rhythm with the higher pitch should be the correct pronunciation.

7: 學生在課堂外可怎樣驗證自己是否用到那4版紙的方法來讀得正確?

A: 每個超過單音節的單詞都有兩個發音方式，但你不知道哪一個是正確的，或不知道你自己的發音是否正確，LEEK拼音方法給你四個衡量標準：最簡單、最快、最順口和最好聽。在兩者之間, 得分比較高的最有可能是正確的。如果還是拿不定主意，就比較兩個高音的音節，看看哪個比較高；較高音節的音律就應該是絕對正確的發音。

8: What pronunciation method does Study Hard Education Centre teach?

A: “Study Hard Education Centre” has started in August 2023 to teach only LEEK English Pronunciation Method for classroom courses and training tutors. Prior to that, “Study Hard Education Centre” taught the International Phonetic Alphabet from 1992 to 2007, and taught the “Phonics English Pronunciation” method from 2005 to 2023. Teaching “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” started from 2020. “LEEK English Pronunciation” has been very popular among adults in Macau, and has become the most popular [Continuing Education] English pronunciation course of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau in 2023, with the most people signing up for it.

A: The “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” book comes with video and/or audio recordings. The audio recording is only the output of the video without images. There are thirty-six segments covering the entire book. The prices for the book (166 pages), video and audio recording are: MOP 380, MOP 210 and MOP 90 respectively. When the book and video are purchased together, the sales price is MOP 490. The “Abridged LEEK English Pronunciation Method” (79 pages) is priced at MOP 190.

10: What is the origin and beginning of “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”?

A: The success of the book “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” is mainly due to Professor Lee’s wife Catherine. She planned his career of teaching English in Macau after his retirement, making the rest of his life meaningful and contributing to society. She said that there were several pronunciation methods in the market, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet, which required memorizing symbols, but I found it too difficult to learn. She thought Professor Lee was the hardest-working person she knew, and asked him why he couldn’t create an English pronunciation method himself? And it must be simple, easy to understand and easy to learn. She was confident that he could do it. With her encouragement and 31 years of on-and-off research and development, Professor Lee had been teaching students the “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” within the English courses since 2012, and had continuously improved and optimized it during the period. At the same time, much thanks must be given to the many schools in Macau for organizing their entire team of English teachers to learn this “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” early on, and providing ideas for improvement

11: What is Professor Lee’s background?

A: Dr./Prof. Kaiman Lee was born in Guilin, Guangxi, China, grew up in Macau, and is a Macau resident. He attended high school and technical college in Hong Kong, received his bachelor’s degree from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a doctoral degree from Texas A&M University in the United States. The first thirteen years of his career were spent in Boston, Massachusetts, and his subsequent career and life were in the San Francisco Bay Area of California and Macau. He was fortunate to be at the right place and at the right time to be involved in the pioneering work of computer graphics in architectural design, and through this opportunity he had taught and conducted seminars around the world. He has written and published more than 30 books, published more than 100 papers for conferences, seminars and symposiums, and lectured at more than 30 universities around the world, including in 1980, being the first visiting professor at Huaqiao (Chinese Overseas) University in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China. He had served as an assistant professor at Florida A&M University. Professor Lee has had a varied academic and professional career, but has spent most of his time in education, writing, and publishing.

12: In addition to learning how to pronounce new words, does this method help remember word meanings and spell words?

A: This book contains approximately 2,600 English words and Chinese translations. If you listen to the professor’s recordings regularly and read this book at the same time, you will become familiar with the pronunciation and explanation of all these words. When these words are used by other people in conversation, there’s a good chance you’ll recognize them immediately and know how they are used. Not only do you know how to pronounce a word, but you also know why it is pronounced the way it is, especially why a syllable is pronounced high, mid, or low pitch. So when a speaker uses a word, you can already spell it out with some confidence. After taking classes, listening to recordings and understanding the pronunciation method, this “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” textbook can make students familiar with the pronunciation and Chinese explanations of the most-commonly-used English words in daily life. They will hardly have to look up the dictionary in the future, killing two birds with one stone. The fonts in the book are larger, which are suitable for middle-aged and elderly people to participate.

13: LEEK only consists 9 classes. Do I need to retake it if I can’t learn it well?

A: If the student feels that he has not learned enough, he should retake the course. Professor Lee does not have another course on pronunciation method. Professor Lee believes that the “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” course constitute the entire English pronunciation method. One option is to take the “Abridged LEEK English Pronunciation Method” as a repeat study; it consists of a six classes, a total of 12 hours.

13: LEEK只有9堂，如果學唔識要重讀嗎?

14: If I didn’t attend the first 2 classes and come back later, can I still learn?

A: Yes, but only if you attend all remaining classes and work extra hard. Students can watch videos of the first two lessons taught previously. Professor Lee will do whatever he can to help, including staying after class to teach one-on-one or arriving early to answer questions. In class, when a student does not understand what is just said, he must ask immediately without waiting. This book contains everything that will be taught in class, so students can read and study on their own first to get some impressions and things will be easier to understand in class. This book comes with the professor’s recording of every word in the book; students can listen to it often and become familiar with the pronunciation of about 2,600 words. These words are almost all English words that you may use or encounter in your life.

14: 如果沒有上頭2堂，之後上返，可以學到嗎?

15: I have zero basic knowledge of English and don’t understand even the 26 English letters. Can I learn it?

A: It’s not impossible, but you’ll have to work extra hard, listen to the recordings over and over, and ask questions in class. The lessons in this book can be taught to students without any English background. The first page of this book teaches how to pronounce the 26 English letters in a standard way. You can repeat this LEEK pronunciation course. Professor Lee does not have another course on pronunciation methods because Professor Lee believes that this course is virtually all there is to English pronunciation.

A: Even if a student thinks he has already taken a pronunciation course from his professor, it would be wise to take the course again to gain insight into the secrets of pronunciation. It is easier to achieve mastery during the second attendance, the results of which can be used throughout your life. One option is to take the “Abridged LEEK English Pronunciation Method” as a repeat course, a total of six classes, with a total of 12 hours.

17: Will Professor Lee teach from the simplest to the most complex?

A: No! In fact, Professor Lee is like a kung-fu master who starts by showing his disciples a complete set of martial arts, so as he teaches a move, the disciples will know how it fits into the entire set. The first four pages taught are the first of three parts in the LEEK English Pronunciation Method. There is nothing in these four pages of basic pronunciation methods that can be ignored. All four pages must be taught together. But since we can only do things one at a time, we have to teach the vowels first, then the consonants, then the relationship between the consonants and the vowels, how to divide a word into syllables and how to make syllable rhythms, and finally how to judge the two pronunciations of a word as to which one is correct. The other two main parts also need to be taught together. But for the same reason, we have to teach the two special forms of vowels first: 1. “Consonant, vowel, consonant, e”; 2. Double vowels, and then teach the two special forms of consonants: the prefixes and the suffixes. All words with special forms of vowels and consonants require those four pages of basic pronunciation methods to pronounce.

18: Since you claim that learning LEEK English Pronunciation Method is so simple and easy, could you give me an example of how easy it is to separate syllables in words?

A: The simplest explanation is this: a consonant leading a vowel together makes a syllable, and doing this repeatedly will give you the other syllables.

A: The simplest explanation is: if there are more than three syllables in a word, the last syllable must be low pitch. The two syllables before the last syllable must be high-mid or mid-high. All syllables before the last three syllables are mid pitch.

19: 既然你聲稱學習LEEK拼音是如此簡單和容易，你可否給我一個例子來說明如何決定一個音節的高、中、低音?

20: What does LEEK mean? Is this the abbreviation of Professor Lee?

A: If you think so, it’s just a coincidence! Professor Lee and his wife have one wish: that his LEEK creation will be spread around the world. The concept of LEEK came from the front yard of their old house, where some leeks sprouted and grew without being sown by Professor Lee. As time progressed, Professor Lee discovered that if they were not cut off, they would continue to grow into hard stems with a ball of fuzz and black seeds at the top. When the wind blows, the ball will break into countless pieces, and the seeds will eventually be carried to every corner of the world.

20: LEEK 是什麼意思？ 這是李教授的簡稱嗎?

A: There is not a fixed price formula, but there are definitely discounts based on usage and quantity. We recommend that schools or groups make recommendations to Study Hard Education Centre management.

A: For teachers who want to teach “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”, the first step is to learn “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” and gain a “LEEK Teaching Certificate” through Study Hard Education Centre. Each LEEK course in a school or group must have a course title approved by Study Hard Education Centre, usually with a specific reference to “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”. The school or group then pays an authorization fee for each student. We recommend that schools or groups make recommendations to Study Hard Education Centre management.

One day, my wife Catherine Guoyuan Yang Lee was worried that if I lived longer than she, not only would I have little to do, my life would become meaningless, and the devil would continue to tempt me. I guess she was worried that if I remarried, I would be mistreated and defrauded of my money, so I must continue to work, give back and contribute to society.

有一天，我的妻子李楊國圓 Catherine 擔心如果我比她長命，不但無所事事，生命會變 得沒有意義，魔鬼更會不斷誘惑我。我猜她指的是擔心我再婚，會被人欺負及欺騙錢財，所以我必須要繼續工作，回饋及貢獻社會。

She and I had been married for more than 50 years. She knew that English was the subject that I was most interested in when I was a child. It was the subject in which I often got the highest marks on my report card during my six years in elementary school. Therefore, we jointly decided that I would teach English in Macau, where I grew up.

她與我結婚五十多年，知道我小時最有興趣的是英文科，是我小學六年之間，成績單上經常最高分的科目，因此便共同決定到我長大的澳門去教英文。

She was very observant, and thought that if I taught English like others, I would not be happy. I needed to have a unique way of teaching English. We both agreed that the first step in learning English was to be able to pronounce the English words you saw on the street, in shopping malls, in advertisements, and in newspapers. It meant that one must learn English pronunciation well.

她很有觀察力，認為如果我像別人一樣教英文的話，一定不會開心，我需要有一個獨一無二的方法教英文。我們一致認為，學習英語的第一步，是要在街上、購物中心內、和報紙中的廣告所看到的英文單詞，都能拼讀出來。就是要學好英語拼音的方法 。

She told me that there were several pronunciation methods on the market, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet that required memorizing symbols, which she found was too difficult for me to learn. She considered me the hardest-working person she knew and asked me why I couldn’t create an English pronunciation method myself? And it had to be simple, easy to understand and easy to learn. She was very confident that I could do it.

她告訴我，市面上有幾種拼音方法，比如國際音標需要記住符號，覺得太難學了。她認為 我是她所認識的人之中最努力的人，問我為什麼不自己去創造一個英語拼音法? 而且必須 要簡單、易懂及易學。她很有信心我一定可以做得到。

I remember that in 1982, we moved from Boston to San Francisco because of a job change. I started putting every English word I didn’t know in my Excel dictionary table. About twenty-some years ago, I had accumulated more than 5,000 new words.

記得1982年，因為轉換工作，我們便從波士頓搬到三藩市生活。我開始把每一個不認識的英文字，都放在我的Excel字典表格裡, 大概到卄幾年前，已經累積有五千多個生字。

In order to create an English pronunciation method from scratch, I analyzed all the English words that I knew and needed to know, divided them into groups with similar or identical pronunciations, and then merged them into a higher-level. I did this over and over again, and in the end I ended up with the two major groups in the second part of the book “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”: [Consonant, Vowel, Consonant, E], and [Double Vowel]. It was then logical to complete the third part of this book: [the prefixes and suffixes of consonants].

為了要從零開始創造一個英語拼音法，我就把所有我認識和需要用得到的英文字來分析，將它們發音相似或相同的，都分成一組一組，然後再把它們合併成為更高階的一組一組。我這樣重覆又重覆的做，到最後就是這本書「LEEK 英語拼音法」裡面第二部分的兩大組 別: [子音，母音，子音，E]，和[雙母音]。也順理成章地完成這本書的第三部分: [子音 的字首和字尾]。

After having written the second and third parts of this book, I had understood the similarities and differences in the pronunciation of all English words, and then I wrote the first part of this book: [Basic pronunciation method].

經過做成了這本書的第二和第三部份，我已經融會貫通了所有英文字發音的共同處和分別處，然後便撰寫了這本書的第一部份: [基本拼音法]。

In March 2020, I used this trial version to teach Cathy and her caregiver. After watching my presentation, they both said that this was indeed a unique English pronunciation method – simple, easy to understand, and easy to learn.

在2020年3月，我用這試讀版教了 Cathy 和照顧她的護理, 她們聽了以後，都說的確這是 獨一無二的拼音方法 — 簡單、易懂、易學。

After thirty-one years of on-and-off research and development, and through the past twelve years of teaching English grammar conversation classes at the “Study Hard Education Center”, guiding students in English pronunciation, and after countless improvements and optimizations, at the beginning of 2022, the book “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” finally was published. Since then, I have been teaching “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” at the Study Hard Education Centre.

經過三十一年斷續的研發，透過以往十二年任教“學勤進修教育中心”英語文法會話班，從中指導學員英語拼音法，又經過無數次的改良及優化，在2022年初,「LEEK 英語拼音法 」這本書終於出版面世了。從此我便在“學勤進修教育中心”教「LEEK英語拼音法」。

Credit of the book “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” being what it is today must be given to my wife Cathy, who planned my English teaching career after retirement so that the rest of my life could be meaningful and contributing to society. At the same time, I would also like to thank many schools in Macau for organizing their entire team of English teachers to learn this “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”.

「LEEK 英語拼音法」這本書有今天的成就，最主要應歸功於我的妻子 Cathy，她規劃了 我退休後的英語教學工作，讓我的餘生有意義而且對社會有所貢獻。同時也要多謝澳門 多所學校，組織了他們全校的英語教師團隊，學習這個「LEEK 英語拼音法」。

Chapter 10: Reporter Interview – 記者採訪

Reporter: Why are you so interested in English?

記者 為什麼你對英語那麼有興趣?

Kaiman: I think it’s easy to figure out why I’m so interested in English. Because in my report card for six years of elementary school, the highest scores in each semester were almost all in English. Can you imagine if I was born interested in English? My destiny is tied to it, so this is not the interest I developed, but it’s possible I was born with this connection.

李啟文: 我覺得很容易想得到為什麼我對英文有興趣。因為在我六年小學的成績單中，每學期成績最高分的幾乎都是英文, 那你能想像得到我是否天生就對英文有興趣? 我的命運是和它牽 連在一起的, 所以這不是我培養出來的興趣，很可能我與生俱來就有這樣的聯繫。

Reporter: Why did you create “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”?

記者 為什麼你會發明「LEEK 英語拼音法」?

Kaiman: It’s not easy. In the early 1990s, my wife Catherine and I were talking about what we wanted to do after we retired. Because she was an engineer and I was an architect, the work we were doing was very prominent and could be done when we were young. We accomplished a lot of big things. But after retirement, there was no way we could keep pace with the younger generation and new technologies. It was impossible for us to continue serving in the same field, so we must figure out what we could do and continue to do until the last day. Since my wife knew that I was very talented and interested in English, so I might as well teach English.

李啟文: 這不是容易的。在1990年初的時候，我太太 Catherine 和我在談論，問我們退休之後想 要做什麼? 因為她是工程師，我是建築師，我們做的工作在年青的時候是很有為的，也是 可以做很多重大的事情出來。但所有這些在退休之後，根本沒有辦法跟年青的一代與新的 科技同步，我們不可能繼續在同一領域服務, 所以一定要想出有什麼可以繼續做下去，可 以做到最後一天的事情。既然我太太知道我對英文十分有緣並且有興趣，那不如去教英文。

Kaiman: If I wanted to teach English, I must be fully prepared, that was, learn English. I was self-taught in English, and I had never attended any advanced English courses. I had never taken a traditional English pronunciation class, but Catherine said that I needed to learn pronunciation when teaching English. She taught me the International Phonetic Alphabet, which I immediately said was impossible because I couldn’t remember it at all. She also taught me other ways, such as to use the keyboard and how to learn the symbols in the dictionary. I had a bad memory and it’s just like that from birth. So there is no way to learn them. But Catherine said that since I was so interested in English, why couldn’t I create one myself? She believed that I could definitely do it. With that encouragement, I began to study English pronunciation.

李啟文: 如果我要教英文，一定要充份準備，那就是要學英文。我對英文的學習是自學的，沒有特別參加進修班之類, 我從來沒有學過正統拼音班，但 Catherine 說教英文都是要去學拼 音的。她教我國際音標，我一聽便說沒有可能，因為我根本不會記得, 她又教我很多例如 用鍵盤的方法，又學字典裏面有符號的方法，我記性不好，生來就是這樣，所以沒有辦法學得到。但 Catherine 說我對英文那麼有興趣, 為何自己不去做一套? 她相信我一定可 以做到的。從這個鼓勵開始我就去研究英語拼音。

Kaiman: I learned English pronunciation through a most difficult way because no one taught me. I carefully analyzed all the English words I knew and the English words I should know, and then arranged the same or similar words together, divided them into groups, and then the groups became bigger and bigger, repeating again and again. After thirty-one years of intermittent research and optimization, the English pronunciation method was finally created.

李啟文: 我學英語拼音是用最艱難的方法學，因為沒有人教我。我將我認識的英文字和應該要去認識的英文字全部很小心地分析，然後把相同或相似的字排列在一起，分成一堆一堆，再細堆變大堆，重複又重複。經過三十一年斷斷續續的研究和優化，最後才將英語拼音法創造出來。

Kaiman: Before my wife passed away and in March 2020, I produced a trial version of my book “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”. She asked me to teach her and her caregiver. This caregiver was from Northeast China. She didn’t understand English at all. After they listened, the caregiver said that the pronunciation method didn’t sound too difficult to learn. My wife’s English was very good. She said that this English pronunciation course was not limited to Macau, but could be applied to the whole world. As long as the Chinese words are translated into other countries’ languages, people in other countries could use the same method to learn English pronunciation.

李啟文: 在我太太去世之前2020年3月的時候，我這本書「LEEK 英語拼音法」試讀版做出來了。她 要我教她和她的護理員，這個護理員是中國東北來的，她一點也不懂英語, 她們聽完之後 ，護理員說這拼音法聽起來好像不是很難學。而我太太的英文是很不錯的，她說這不只是局限在澳門教的英語拼音班，而是可以推廣至全世界。只要將中文字翻譯成其他國家的語言，其他國家的人都可以用同一個方法來學英語拼音。

Kaiman: I was very lucky to be able to come to Macau to teach English at Study Hard Education Centre. Starting from March 2012, some English pronunciation methods were taught every year. The pronunciation method had been gradually improved along the way, and now it is virtually complete. It can almost be said that this English pronunciation method can determine if each syllable is high, low, or medium pitch, and determine where the high-pitch syllable of the word is, and everything can all be explained. I don’t know if there would be another English pronunciation method that could have the same effect. I then would rather try to make this pronunciation method as simple and easy to understand as possible to teach myself and others.

李啟文: 很幸運可以來到澳門學勤來教授英文。在這裡由2012年3月開始，每年都教一些英語拼音法, 拼音方法一路慢慢改進，直到現在大概已經做到圓滿。差不多可以說這英語拼音能將 每個音節都可以決定它是高、低、或中音，決定單詞的重音在哪裡，而且都能夠解釋得出 來。不知道是否會有第二款英語拼音法能有同一效果, 我還是先將這個拼音法盡量簡單易 懂來教自己，亦用來教其他人。

Reporter: What are the benefits of this pronunciation method?

記者 這個拼音法有什麼好處？

Kaiman: The name “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” was one my wife thought was appropriate. “LEEK” is a kind of scallion; it grew in the front yard of my house. I didn’t plant it and I didn’t know where it came from. These leek, if I ignored them, would gradually turn into a hard stem, with a large ball of fluff forming at the top. Inside are hundreds or thousands of tiny black seeds. When blown by a strong wind, the seeds would scatter all over. My wife thought this pronunciation method could be spread all over the world, so she named it “LEEK English Pronunciation Method”. So, what are its benefits? The advantage of it is that the three pitches of “Ah (high pitch), ah (low pitch), a (mid pitch)” are definitely required. My wife said that other English pronunciation methods did not have this rule. Without these high, low and medium pitches, it would be almost impossible to pronounce a word correctly. This is the most critical reason and the most important factor in the success of the “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” being applied throughout the world.

李啟文: 「LEEK 英語拼音法」這個名字是我太太認為是適合的。“LEEK”是一種韭蔥，它在我家 的前院是無止境地生長出來，我沒有種它，我不知道它是從什麼地方吹過來的。這些蔥，如果我不理會它，它就逐漸變成硬的一條莖，最上端形成大球絨毛，內裡藏著細細小小、百百千千粒的黑色種子，受大風一吹，種子就會隨風飛散。我的太太認為這是可以傳播到全世界，所以就命名「LEEK 英語拼音法」。那麼它的好處是什麼呢？它的好處是因為 “啊、牙、亞”三個音調是一定需要的，我太太說其它的英語拼音法是沒有這規則。如果沒有這三個高低中音調，拼音是幾乎沒有可能拼對的，這個是最特殊的原因，也是「LEEK 英語拼音法」可以成功、可以推廣到全世界最主要的因素。

Reporter: Why do you still want to contribute to English even after you have retired?

記者 為什麼你已退休後還想對英文做出貢獻？

Kaiman: My view on life is that I must continue to make contributions, because I believe that the current period of my life is an opportunity for me to contribute to the world. If there is an afterlife, the contributions in this life will lay the foundation for the next life. What I can contribute, of course, is the most effective way to contribute something that I think I am destined to do and have the skills to do. I can teach English forever, and I can really teach it until the last day of my life. If I end up in a wheelchair one day, I think Mr. Towinal Mak will welcome me to continue teaching here at Study Hard Education Centre, and I can continue to teach.

李啟文: 我對人生的看法是一定要不停的做出貢獻，因為我認為當下人生的時間, 是讓我對世界做 出貢獻的機會。如果有來生的話，今生的貢獻，就為來生打好了基礎。那我可以貢獻的，當然是用我認為有緣份，我有技能方面的東西來貢獻是最有效的。教英文是我可以一直教下去，是真的可以教到人生最後的一天。如果我有一天坐輪椅了，我想麥健才先生在學勤這裡也會歡迎我繼續任教，我一樣可以一直教下去。

Kaiman: I also continue to learn English, because learning English is endless, but why do I need to learn so much English? Because if I learn more, I can really comprehend every aspect of English, and I can develop teaching materials that are as simple, as easy, and as fast as the “LEEK English Pronunciation Method” that can be learned in English.

李啟文: 我也在繼續學英文，因為英文是學之不盡的，那我為什麼要學那麼多英文？因為我學得多的話，我真的可以融會貫通英文裡的每一樣內容，我就可以做出教材像「LEEK 英語拼音 法」那樣簡單、那樣容易、那樣快就可以學到的英文。

Kaiman: For example, people often say that learning English grammar is very difficult. I say that after I have internalized it, I only need to teach students verbs and verb-look-alikes. Verb look-alikes are branches derived from verbs and are no longer verbs. If students can analyze and use these two groups, they can learn all eight parts of English grammar. Another subject I teach is “English Grammar Conversation”. I have internalized the sixteen tenses of verbs and have made them into a chart on a sheet of paper. With this chart, I can explain and apply all sixteen tenses. This chart consists of an example of each tense. With this chart, I can teach students a lot of English aspects. In the end, the students’ English proficiency will improve a lot, and students will feel that English is really not that difficult to learn. So I really hope to live longer so that I can teach longer and make more contributions.

李啟文: 譬如人們常說學英文文法十分困難，我說我教英文文法，是融會貫通了之後，我只要教學生動詞和似動詞，似動詞就是源於動詞的分支，已經不是動詞。如果這兩個組別學生可以分析得出來，而且可以用得到，英文文法的八部學生就可以全部學到了。所以我任教的另外一科就是「英語文法會話」。我是融會貫通了動詞的十六個時式，也稱為時態，已經把 它們製作成一版紙的圖片，用這圖片就已經可以解釋，明白，應用了全部十六個時態，並 且這版紙已將每一個時式都加插了一個舉例。我憑這一版紙就可以教學生很多很多的英文 內容。到底，學生的英文就會有很大進步，而且學生會覺得英文真的不難學。所以我很希 望可以活得更長久，那我就可以教得更長久,並做出更多貢獻。
